Watch: 16-Year-Old Malta Footballer Becomes English Team’s Youngest Player To Debut Since 1936
Once again, Malta’s football future is looking bright!
At just 16 years old, Gunner Elliott has become the youngest player to debut for Chesterfield FC since 1936, stepping onto the pitch during Thursday’s League Two match against Fleetwood Town as a spritely and hungry forward.
In fact, Elliot is actually the second-youngest player to play for the club.

Representing Malta at the U-17 level, Elliott also makes history as only the second player to play for the island to also feature in a League Two game, following Luke Dimech’s work with Mansfield Town, Chester City, and Macclesfield.
“I’m English, but I have Maltese family, grandparents, so that’s why I’ve been playing with Malta’s Under-17s this year,” Elliot said in a BBC Radio Sheffield interview after the match. “We’ve been over there quite a few times, me as a child, I love it over there, but originally I’m English.”
“It’s really good over there,” Elliot smiled when asked about the difference in climate between England and Malta, but did admit that “the football is a lot different”.
Good luck Elliott!
