Ħamrun Spartans overcame a 2-0 deficit against Lithuanian champions FK Žalgiris to qualify for the second round of the Champions League last night.

After falling to a 2-0 defeat, it was an uphill task for Ħamrun. However, goals from Salio Thioune and birthday boy Joseph Mbong cancelled the deficit inside the opening 45 minutes.

As neither side could secure an advantage in the second half or in 30 minutes of extra time, the game went to a penalty shootout, where 28 penalties were taken.

Jovan Cadenovic ended up scoring Ħamrun’s decisive penalty, after Henry Bonello had saved the previous shot.

Ħamrun will now play against Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv, with the two legs scheduled for 22nd and 29th July.
