Watch: Ħamrun Spartans Revel In Their Victory After Last Night’s Match

The Ħamrun Spartans have made Malta proud, securing a place in the UEFA Conference League group stage after a 2-2 draw against Latvian club FC RFS.
The team secured the win with a 3-2 aggregate score, having held their advantage from a 1-0 triumph in the first leg.
In what’s already being called the club’s biggest night in European football, Fans went through every possible emotion as the Maltese champions took the lead early on, only to see it wiped out almost instantly by the Latvian side.
But the Spartans weren’t about to back down. Goals from Saliou Thioune and Vincenzo Polito twice pushed them ahead, and even though FC RFS kept clawing back with equalisers, the Spartans dug deep, showing grit and heart to hold their ground and booked themselves a place in the history books.
Thanks to their first-leg advantage, the Spartans managed to keep level and secure qualification against the Latvian outfit.
It’s the latest chapter in a wild journey that started back in 2020, when businessman Jospeh Portelli stepped in as club president. Within months, Ħamrun Spartans had won their first Malta Premier League title in three decades.
From day one, Portelli had made it crystal clear, he wanted to see the Spartans break barriers and make it to the group stages of a UEFA competition. Back then, many thought he was dreaming. On Thursday night, that dream became reality.
The build-up to the match was electric. CEO Marcel Bonnici fired up supporters with a rallying cry, calling the game a potential “game-changer” for Maltese football.
But coach Giacomo Modica kept his cool. While he knew what was at stake, he reminded his players not to let the pressure get to them. The message was simple: stay grounded, play your game, and let the results speak for themselves.
Well done Spartans, you made Malta proud!
