Watch: Malta Basketball Association Takes Action Against Coach And Player He Tripped

The Malta Basketball Association announced it has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Starlites coach Paul Ferrante for tripping Hibernians player Derek Brown in a recent cup final.
It announced it would also take action against Brown for speaking publicly about the incident, arguing his comments “violated the MBA’s disciplinary code”. It is believed that this was a reference to his allegation on Instagram that referees cheated so that they could make money through bets.
The incident occurred last Sunday at the MBA Complex during the knock-out final between Starlites and Hibernians, which Starlites eventually won 75-74.
In the opening quarter of the match, Brown tried to break forward but was tripped by Ferrante.

Brown published the video on his X account and called out the MBA for its lack of action.
“As I’m continuing my professional career here in Malta. I was attacked by the other team’s coach,” he said. “He hurt me by tripping me during a cup final. The MBA has done nothing about this as I was threatened with suspension if I don’t take down these videos.”
In a statement today, the MBA confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against both Ferrante and Brown.
“The Association’s Disciplinary Commissioner has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Starlites coach Paul Ferrante over alleged misconduct during Sunday’s match,” it said.
“The MBA also acknowledges the receipt of a report from Hibernians BC about the on-court incident whereby the alleged offence took place during the afore-mentioned game.”
“The Malta Basketball Association has also taken cognizance of the comments and posts made by Hibernians BC player Derek Brown on his personal social media account/s. The Association’s Disciplinary Commissioner has also opened disciplinary proceedings against Mr Brown over violations of the MBA’s Disciplinary Code.”
“In reaffirming our full and unconditional commitment to safeguard and protect the integrity of basketball, the MBA vows to vigorously tackle any allegations or claims of any acts or attempts that go against the spirit of fair play in accordance with the Association’s regulations.”
“The Malta Basketball Association will not be making any further comment on this matter until the inquiries and disciplinary proceedings have been concluded.”
