Ultra-endurance swimmer Neil Agius and record-breaking athlete Fabio Spiteri took on a 12-hour community charity swim in aid of Inspire Malta yesterday.

The swim took place at Neptunes swimming club, and encouraged the public to donate to a greater cause, with the aim of increasing swimming therapy sessions at Inspire.

People gathered round to watch and show their support, including public figures such as Bernard Grech.

The two were also joined by others throughout the swim. One of the swimmers, Thomas Mifsud, was taught to swim by Neil himself with just his arms and abdominal muscles at the age of three since he does not have use of his legs and is a wheelchair user.

Thomas was born with spina bifida, a condition at birth which occurs when the spine and spinal chors don’t develop properly,  and osteogenesis imperfecta, which causes bones to break easily. In addition to obtaining a sponsorship for his efforts for Inspire, Thomas completed the swim in a remarkable record of six hours and seven minutes.

They were also joined by Neil’s nephew, who has been “in the water from when he was just a few months old,” said Neil’s partner Lara Vella on social media.

Neil later revealed the total distance he swam alongside Fabio, adding up to 44 km, and only stopping for short energy-fuelling breaks.

“We’re shining a light on a sport that can give our children the safety, access and ability to enjoy swimming lessons together with their families,” said Neil.

Well done to everyone who participated!
