Watch: Sport Visa Launched For Athletes On Trial In Malta

A new sport visa has been launched specifically for athletes outside of the European Union who come to Malta for sport team trials.

“We are launching a sport visa for those who come to Malta for a trial. What is clear is that there cannot be any loopholes. If an athlete comes to play waterpolo or football, this person can only apply for a job in that area,” said Minister Byron Camilleri told One News.

This visa allows athletes to be in Malta for 100 days for trials in a sport club registered with Sport Malta or with other national sport entities.

Up until now, sport clubs needed to apply for a short term visa for the athletes they invited for trials, however, this kind of visa did not allow economic activity for the athlete.

There are several criteria that need to be met before applying for the sport visa both for the sport club and for the athlete. Indeed, Camilleri went on to say how this new visa allows the clubs to have more opportunities and allows the Maltese authorities to have more control over the field.

What do you think about the sport visa’s impact on the Maltese sport scene?
