WATCH: Surfers Catch Some Sweet Maltese Waves On International Surfing Day
The azure sea surrounding Malta’s shores make for some world-class swimming and diving sites – but some dedicated watersportsmen have become determined to make Malta’s surfing credentials get their fair due as well.
“Yes you can surf in Malta!” Valerio Cicconi from the Malta Surf School told Lovin Malta. “There are about 10 spots for beginners to advanced surfers around Malta and Gozo. The waves are mostly produced by the wind, so you need to know exactly when and where you can have good sessions.”
Last Saturday was International Surfing Day, and local and foreign surfers met up in Għajn Tuffieħa to catch some radical air together.
“We had really fun waves last weekend – the conditions were super nice. We had surfers from all around the world surfing with us on the Għajn Tuffieħa waves,” says Valerio.
With Malta receiving 100 days of bountiful surf, there are plenty days to get your feet wet
Gerben Miedema, a beginner surfer who took advantage of the sweet conditions over the weekend, spoke about the types of waves Malta gets
“The waves are wind waves, so it’s much harder then swell waves, but it is easy to learn on the small ones,” he said.
Wind waves, the type of waves Malta experiences, are typically generated on the surface of the ocean locally, by wind for example. Swell waves are typically wind-generated waves from elsewhere, and not locally generated.
