WATCH: Teenage Weightlifter Tenishia Thornton Smashes Five National Records On Her Way To Win At European Championships

Maltese weightlifting phenom Tenishia Thornton broke five national records as she placed first in the B category of the 49kg weight class at the European Championships in Moscow, Russia.

The 15-year-old weightlifter continues to raise the bar for the sport after putting on a 159kg total performance – which is four kilograms improvement from her Youth World Championships performance last year in which she finished in third place.

Thornton lifted 70kg in the Snatch and 89kg in the Clean and Jerk, breaking a total of five national records with her clean and jerk attempts and her overall totals.

The Maltese weightlifter outperformed Greek lifter Maria Pipiliaridou and Moldovan Hincu Teodora-Luminita who had combined scores of 157kg and 155kg respectively.

Thornton also broke the Commonwealth Youth Record for Snatches and Totals.

Earlier this year, Lovin Malta spoke to the rising star about life as a young female weightlifter and her aspirations of competing in the Olympic Games.

Malta is currently participating in the European Championships in Russia. Yasmin Zammit Stevens will also be competing this Wednesday at 7:30am in the 71kg category.
