It might be fresh, cloudy, rainy and even stormy in most places around Malta, but that hasn’t stopped Neil Agius from looking forward to embarking on his epic 160-kilometre swim soon.

Today saw the official opening of a three-week weather window for Agius to attempt the behemoth swim around the Maltese Islands… but rain, thunder and strong winds are currently dominating the forecast. Did that deter the former Olympian though? Of course not!

“The window is open, rains and storms are coming, but hopefully we’ll have the calm after the storm,” Agius said in a video uploaded today, smiling on an empty beach as he prepared to continue his gruelling training sessions at sea.
“For me, it’s a huge game of patience now,” Agius said in a separate video earlier today. “That hardest game of patience that I ever had to endure, because obviously I’m very eager to swim.”

“We’re on a 24-hour standby waiting for the right window,” Agius continued. “We have a dedicated team checking the forecasts. Obviously, this is a really tricky exercise to be able to tell what’s going to be happening in four, five days. There’s always that element of risk that we need to take and also trust. But we’re all very excited.”

Last night, as rain descended on the islands and the weather window officially opened, Agius posted a short video from the National Pool making light of the situation… but seeing as he has three whole weeks ahead of him for the swim to take place and thousands of jellyfish was the only thing that ever stopped him, our hopes are as high as his right now!
