“Xejn Mhu Xejn Culture” Former International Footballer Comments On State Of Sports In Malta

André Schembri took to facebook in response to an article posted on Times of Malta about the fact that no Maltese athlete has ever won a medal in the Olympics.

“Sport is a reflection of society,” Schembri says, “the same issues we see in our society, show in sports,”

Malta has been competing in the Olympics for 96 years, with our first appearance being in water-polo, where the nine man team made it to the quarter-finals in the 1928 games in Amsterdam.

The problem isn’t our athletes, he says, but the political leaders who shrug their shoulders and create a “xejn mhu xejn” (which literally translates to nothing is nothing) culture, as in whatever it is not important in the greater scheme of things.

“When we switch from a culture of nepotism to one of meritocracy, then we can actually start thinking of winning anything in sports.”
