Ultimate bad boy and American rebel James Dean had a love affair with many a fast car, but it was to be a 356 Pré-A Speedster 1500 Super 1954 that was set to feature in six of his films in the mid 50s. Now, the unique car that was bought by Warner Brothers for Dean to shoot in is coming to Malta for a classic race.
This October, the gorgeous speedster – which is one of only 154 ever built – will be making an appearance at the Malta Classic 2018. The four-day event features a hill climb in Mtaħleb and a “concours d’elegance” in Mdina. The annual event features a great deal of glorious classics in pristine condition, but the Porsche Speedster will definitely still be able to turn some heads.
Following Dean’s tragic death in 1955, the ’54 Porsche was used for two films about the 24-year-old superstar, but then ended up remaining in storage at the Warner Brother studios for many years.
Every part of this rare car’s history has been steeped with intrigue and hope. The current owner, Vincent Tourneur, is a paraplegic with a passion for Porsches. By time, the Porsche became his pet project, ending up making its own little bit of 21st century history.
Adapting the car so that he’d be able to drive it, the Speedster became the first ever of its kind of be fitted with full hand controls… which means it can be driven purely by hand.
