Did You Use One Of These Passwords In 2017? It’s Time To Change Things Up

As more and more people depend on devices for their daily lives, remembering different and complex passwords can get a bit tough. And while some of us have developed strategies to help them, others rely on the same password all throughout… and a bad one, at that.

Global password managers SplashData have released the world’s 100 most common (i.e. worst) passwords used in 2017, and it’s not looking too good. Some of these are so hilariously bad, you’d think people would be using them ironically… until you remember they’re one of the only things standing between them and a complete stranger on the internet.

Here are some of the worst passwords of 2017. Do you still use any of these?

1. ‘password’

Oh, we’re off to the races aren’t we?

Look, we’ve all had that one intense brainwave where we thought it would be hilarious and genius to have ‘password’ as your password, but guess what – millions of people have had the exact same thought for years now.

This timeless classic took the second place for worst password of 2017. In other words, it’s time to change that ‘password’ password, for the good of your own security.

And don’t think about changing things up with a cheeky number and writing ‘passw0rd’ instead, because that also made it on the list.

2. ‘qwerty’

A.K.A. the refined keyboard smash.

Find the first six letters on your keyboard and just type them in, in that exact order. Yeah, that can’t possibly be good.

3. ‘letmein’

Hilarious.

Also, it seems, way too common to be used in 2017 (or any other year really).

4. ‘football’

For those people who wear their passion on their sleeve. Football teams like Chelsea and words like ‘soccer’ also made the list further down.

“Wait, isn’t this that guy who’s always going on about Juventus? Try ‘Juve’, and if that fails, it’s probably ‘football’.”

Aaand you’re hacked.

5. ‘iloveyou’

Awwh, you shouldn’t have.

No really, please; you really shouldn’t have.

6. ‘welcome’

Who is this welcome really directed to?

Your computer? Yourself? The guy who just managed to guess your password on the second try?

7. ‘monkey’

There are no words to explain this one.

Maybe it’s an easy word to quickly type, or maybe it’s a play on the wordkey’. All we know is it’s one of the 10 most common passwords of the year, so you should probably avoid it.

8. ‘abc123’

This is not kindergarten, Susan.

This is the only thing standing between a stranger and your online transactions.

9. ‘starwars’

The least you could do if you’re going to be using this password is to not show everyone you’re a huge Star Wars fan on a day-to-day basis.

Although the best you could do is just choose a different password.

10. ‘hello’

Um, goodbye.

11. ‘fuckyou’

Well, I never.

12. People’s actual first name

Who in their right minds would think that this is an actually good idea?

First names like Robert, Matthew, Daniel, Andrew, Andrea, Jordan, Harley, Joshua and George all made it to the top 50 of the list, but even if your name isn’t on there, maybe try a little harder when coming up with a password?

13. Car brands

We’re willing to bet there are a couple of Maltese people out there who fall in this category, especially considering our country’s fascination with automobiles.

‘Ferrari’, ‘Mercedes’ and ‘Corvette’ were the ones to make it to the top 50 though, so maybe ‘Skoda’ and ‘HondaCivicArmatTan1992’ are safe after all.

14. Birth years

Another password that’s just too easy to guess.

While towards the bottom of the list, these still made an appearance. Interestingly, the four most common passwords of this kind were ‘1989’, ‘1990’, ‘1991’, and ‘1992’. Seems like millennials really don’t have their shit together after all.

15. The classic ‘123456‘ (and any other derivation)

So many years after the invention of the internet, this password is still sitting comfortably at the number one spot. Other derivates, like ‘12345678’, ‘123123’ and ‘123456789’ took other top spots (the former even made it to Number 3).

Oh, and let’s not forget ‘654321’. Damn, way to switch things up.

Brace yourself, and if you find your password on the list, it’s probably time to switch things up.
