Guest Post: ChatGPT Told Me Which Human Jobs AI Will Most Likely Replace One Day

I recently asked Chat GPT-4, the latest incarnation of the artificial intelligence organisation OpenAI, to provide me with a list of jobs that it is likely to replace, along with a summary of the human traits most closely associated with the roles.

The results are listed in the screenshot below (if your job is any of the ones listed, you might want to take notice):

Imagine, if you will, Whatsapping your friends on a Saturday morning about how poorly your Tinder date went the night before, resulting in an early Uber ride home which you used to browse Instagram, see how your Bitcoin was doing on Revolut, before proceeding to order a consolation Deliveroo takeout.

While seemingly indispensable today, a mere 15 years ago none of these businesses even existed, much less reached the cultural ubiquity they all now (sadly) enjoy.

Such rapid cultural shifts naturally impact corporate sector performance: of the companies listed on the Fortune 500 in 2000, over half have since either gone bankrupt, been acquired or ceased to exist.

The world of employment is also affected by extension. According to a recent estimate reported by the World Economic Forum, two thirds of children entering primary school today will end up working in job types that don’t even exist yet.

With the impending onset of artificial intelligence in everyday life, the role humans play in the value chain will be altered even further.

How therefore should we prepare the next generation for an uncertain future? If we can’t predict what jobs will be most valued in the future, how do we “future-proof” our children’s education?

To my mind, we are fast moving away from the traditional knowledge economy we all grew up in: where being paid for ‘what you know’ ran at the core of what value you brought to the table in your job.

AI – essentially a calculator for knowledge – will now take up that space instead.

Analysts and junior consultants – effectively dogsbodies hired to save time for MDs and partners pitching to clients by putting models and decks together – will be replaced by sophisticated platforms that can produce the work in significantly less time and with much higher accuracy.

Media jobs (advertising, content creation, journalism), legal industry jobs (paralegals, legal assistants), finance jobs (equity analysis, trading, personal finance) and even tech jobs (data analysts, engineers, programmers) are all up for some serious disruption, to name but a few.

What AI can’t easily replicate, however, are the traits that make us innately human – things like creativity, curiosity, collaboration and critical thinking. While AI can put in a lot of the groundwork, it will still need to be vetted, packaged and delivered by humans with the experience to nurture the underlying product and customise it to the needs of the end user.

Just like with the onset of sophisticated machinery in the 20th century, experienced professionals will be needed to work alongside the technology to bring the most out of it. This means that the job market will evolve, rather than decline, rewarding those that embrace this brave new world by adopting the skills necessary to thrive in it.

And how best should we prepare for this new environment? By developing the kinds of skills that help us navigate knowledge, rather than the knowledge itself.

Using mental models as frameworks for problem solving is a great way to do this, and getting our kids onto these thought processes at an early age is a great way to position them for success in the future.
