In Photos: Massive Operation Transporting The New Kappara Road Looks As Epic As It Sounds

Malta’s Kappara Project is well on its way, and now that the piers (i.e. those large pillars) have already been put in place, it’s time for parts of the actual road to start showing up.

Throughout this week, a massive operation is transporting the eight girders for the carriageway which will take vehicles from St. Julian’s towards Msida. The other eight girders (the longest of which is 30 metres long) will be transported at a later stage.

On Wednesday and Thursday night, between 10pm and 6am, the roads from Marsa’s Dock 7 to Kappara were completely closed in one direction, as the first four girders were transported on the beds of two huge trucks. Transport Malta was there to document the whole impressive feat.

All 16 girders arrived in Malta last week on a massive ship which came all the way from Spain (where a firm constructed them to Transport Malta’s requirements).

Unloading them was already a sight in itself, and the girders were taken to Marsa for storage.

Earlier this month, a transport trial for the beams was carried out, where a long convoy of 16 bikes, two trailers, numerous support vehicles, and hollow makeshift structures to represent girders slowly made their way from Marsa to Kappara to make sure this week’s transportation goes off without a hitch.

Once the girders made it to their destination safe and sound, of course, another vital part of the project commenced; unloading them and placing them onto the pillars and welding them into place.

As of this morning, more girders were put in place, but if you’d like to stay tuned to everything as it happens, Transport Malta has set up live webcams on the site.
