So how can we make sure that we’re safe?
That’s what the National Cyber Security Awareness and Educational Campaign, conducted by MITA, is all about.
The launch of this campaign coincides with the European Cyber Security Month held by the EU, and all Member States will be participating in raising awareness on cyber hygiene to ensure responsible and secure use of cyber space.

Wait, what is cyber hygiene?
Basically, it’s what you can do to keep whatever online systems you use healthy and improve your own online security. These are DIY checks that you can carry out to ensure the safety of your identity and other details that could be stolen or corrupted.
The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and education on cyber security for certain strata of society (such as students), SMEs and the public sector.
This sounds like hefty stuff, but the Ministry of Financial Services, Digital Economy & Innovation told Lovin Malta that individuals have a wide variety of topics to learn, precautions to take, and awareness to be raised. Topics covered include:
1. The importance of longer passwords and changing them regularly
2. Being cautious when providing personal data or buying things online
3. Greater awareness on spam emails
4. The responsible use of social media
5. Avoiding phishing scams (that is, ‘fake’ firms asking you to reveal personal info such as credit card numbers)

The campaign was launched by Parliamentary Secretary for Financial Services, Digital Economy and Innovation Silvio Schembri in the presence of Minister for Security and Home Affairs Michael Farrugia this week, and will include a month of initiatives to raise awareness on how to ensure your digital protection.
