Keep The Human In The Loop: Meet The Maltese Woman Blending Tech With Heart

When you think of Malta’s tech landscape, few names carry as much quiet influence as Angele Giuliano. Founder and Managing Director of AcrossLimits, Giuliano has spent the last 25+ years using technology to solve real-world problems, especially in the social and healthcare sectors, always keeping a human-first mindset at the centre of her work.
While the ICT industry continues to boom with dynamic opportunities, one thing remains clear: the gender gap in tech is still very real, especially in Malta and Gozo. It’s something the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) has been actively trying to change through school visits and initiatives like Girls in ICT, aiming to demystify STEM careers for young girls.
For Angele, the tech spark was lit early. “I used to hang out at my dad’s workplace, he was an engineer,” she recalls. “And I took over my male cousin’s computers before getting my own at nine years old.” It was the start of a lifelong journey that would eventually lead her deep into quantum computing, AI, and other cutting-edge tech fields.
But at the core of her work is something surprisingly simple: solving problems to make life better.

One of the projects she holds closest to her heart? The ITAMA project, which used AI to screen for coeliac disease. “We tested 20,000 children across Europe and found 350 undiagnosed cases. They’ll hopefully live healthier lives because of that project. That’s incredibly meaningful.”
Of course, not everything in tech is instant gratification. “Sometimes it’s frustrating,” she admits. “You don’t always know the impact of what you’re building right away. Technology on its own won’t save the world, we have to keep refining it, keep learning how to use it for good.”
Despite working in what’s long been a male-dominated space, Angele sees her difference as a strength. “I was the only woman in my university course, but I’ve found more doors have opened for me than closed. That said, there’s still a lack of women in senior roles and deep tech. I believe quotas can help, not forever, but as a temporary solution to get us there.”

Her advice to the next generation of girls eyeing a tech future?
“Don’t follow the money – follow your heart. Choose something you’re passionate about and practical. If you love art, be a designer. If you’re into biology, check out bioinformatics. Tech needs all kinds of minds.”
As for the future of ICT? Angele sums it up with one simple rule: “Keep the human in the loop. Because behind every line of code, there’s a real person who stands to benefit or lose, depending on how we choose to build the future.”
