Much of our lives has shifted online over the past decade, with successive technological breakthroughs having completely changed the way we communicate and spend our time. One Malta-based company, Nium, is helping lead the way.

Companies in the modern era are global by default and able to seek opportunities beyond their country’s shores. But while commerce has become decidedly more international, the transfer of money remains restricted by geographical borders with businesses still reliant on a fragmented patchwork of local and bridging solutions.

The money and time spent transferring funds from one part of the world to another can make all the difference to a business seeking rapid growth or to maintain a competitive advantage within its market.

Singapore-based start-up Nium is a global leader in Modern Money Movement and a key player driving the world’s shift towards a more coherent and efficient money transfer system.

The platform provides banks, payment providers and businesses with access to global payment and card issuance solutions in over 100 currencies across 100+ countries.

As technology continues to shape the way we live, it will become increasingly important for businesses to embed payments into their software products. Nium’s suite of bank-grade APIs allows its clients to fully customise their money transfer solution without the need to build their own payment infrastructure.

In the seven years since it was established, the digital payments company has gone from strength to strength. It employs over 1,000 people across the globe and is currently valued at more than $2 billion. It has also managed to attract several notable investors, including the payment giant Visa.

In 2021 Nium completed the acquisition of the Maltese travel payment platform Ixaris – its first global acquisition and one of the largest in Malta – with plans to grow its European workforce significantly over the next year, including in Malta. In fact, Nium is currently recruiting and is looking for the best and brightest talent to fill over 100 open vacancies, including 15 in Malta. Remote opportunities are also available no matter where you are in the world.

Ixaris, now part of Nium, retains its core business is providing flexible funding and payment methods that help airlines and online booking platforms reduce surcharges, earn rebates, flatten foreign exchange fees and streamline reconciliation.

It is one of the few companies providing payment solutions for the travel sector, which was among the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and one which is in crucial need of cost-cutting innovation.

By pairing its advanced pay in, pay out and embedding foreign exchange capabilities with Ixaris’ leading virtual card capability, Nium is now able to offer the quick, reliable and secure payment services required in today’s fast-paced travel sector.

Nium’s recent acquisition of Wirecard Forex and Socash have further boosted its platform’s capabilities as it looks to become the global money transfer leader by offering users a pleasant and straightforward experience.

The platform also includes a suite of services allowing customers to process payments and investment in cryptocurrencies.

Underpinning Nium is a portfolio of licenses and high degree of trust with financial regulators across eleven regional jurisdictions. Together with its tech assets, Nium’s regulatory edge distinguishes it from competing service providers.

As the world of business continues to evolve the need for better payment infrastructures is only going to increase. Nium’s solutions allow companies to transition to a modern money movement system that can keep up with the pace of today’s business while being prepared to embrace future innovation.
