The University of Malta has confirmed it intends to adapt its assessment methods to make it harder for students to cheat on assignments by making use of the powerful new ChatGPT AI chatbot.

Speaking to ONE News, University Rector Alfred Vella said that people shouldn’t fear AI-based technology because, if used correctly, it can find efficient solutions to complicated and help humans complete mundane daily chores.

“Microsoft Excel didn’t create a single accountant, but accountants use these databases to improve the efficiency of their work. I think this will be the future of this software,” he predicted.

He said students should use ChatGPT and similar tech as a learning aide rather than a cheating tool but acknowledged that the temptation to cheat will always remain.

To mitigate this risk, the University will therefore adapt its methods of assessment to make it harder for students to use the technology as a cheating tool.

While he didn’t clarify how the assignment system will change, the record said that the traditional supervised pen-and-paper exam, where students cannot access the Internet, will remain the most common assessment method, at least for now

Vella also expressed confidence that tools will eventually be designed to successfully detect plagiarism through ChatGPT.

“Research in this area is ongoing and already yielding results,” he said

The rise of ChatGPT, which is capable of producing high-quality original essays, has got universities and schools around the world rethinking their assessment methods.

Schools in New York City schools have banned the use of ChatGPT on all devices and networks, while Australian universities have signalled that a greater focus will be placed on in-person exams.

Do you think schools and universities should change their assessment methods?
