WATCH: Maltese Student’s University Thesis Project Helps Teach People Sign Language With A Game
Maurice Sultana, a Maltese student studying at Middlesex University, had a super cool project as a thesis idea, which he showed off in a recent video uploaded by Malta’s award-winning show Gadgets .
Focusing on how game technology could be used in education instead, Maurice set up a Virtual-Reality glove, hooked up to a game which he designed and a VR headset which he said is important to “eliminate any distractions so that the user can fully focus on learning.”
“I was always interested in game technology,” Maurice explained, “and to be able to somehow join that with education was for me an important step towards evaluating this technology’s potential.”
The game which Maurice designed comes in three parts. First, the player can observer the letters of the sign language and practice freely with forming them with his own hands. Since users will be making use of a VR glove, any signs they make in real will automatically be translated into the game in real-time. The second part of the game is an “progress-based” exercise in emulating the signs (corresponding to each letter) which another hand would be showing them. Finally, a couple of rounds of Hangman where the user can only suggest letters through sign language tests how much information has actually been retained. Neat!
