Watch: TVM Launches Malta’s First AI News Presenter

Malta has introduced its first AI television presenter, Professor Alexiei Dingli, a University of Malta AI expert, who now appears as a hyper-realistic avatar on TVM’s new series, “Artificial Intelligence in Our Lives”.
The programme, airing at 11pm on Thursdays, aims to educate viewers about AI’s impact on daily life.
The avatar, designed using Dingli’s likeness and voice recordings, combines AI-generated visuals with a genuine human voice to ensure cultural and linguistic authenticity. A disclaimer is displayed during the show to inform viewers that the presenter is an AI avatar.
The series addresses various AI applications, including education, healthcare, and social relationships, featuring discussions with AI experts. While much of the script is AI-generated, human editors ensure its accuracy.
Dingli envisions AI presenters as a future in broadcasting, offering consistent delivery without human limitations. However, former TVM news anchor Keith Demicoli cautions that AI lacks the emotional intelligence and spontaneity of human presenters, particularly in delivering sensitive news.
The initiative also serves as an educational tool to help the public distinguish between real and AI-generated content, addressing concerns about the rise of deepfakes.
As AI technology continues to evolve, Malta’s experiment with an AI television presenter marks a significant step in exploring its potential in media and education.
