From Clubfoot Sufferer To West End: Maltese Actress’ Inspirational Journey Turned Into Mini Series

Born with clubfoot, life didn’t start easy for Maltese actress Sarah Naudi.

Yet despite being barraged by barriers she was told were unbreakable, Sarah managed to become a professional dancer and actress who has showcased her talents at world-famous West End stages.

Now, she has decided to draw inspiration from her own story and turn it into a dramatic mini-series called The Home Straight – shot and set in Malta.

The Home Straight depicts the story of Serena Segalle, a student who was told that she would never be able to run again.

Growing up, Segalle didn’t have it easy. Her parents split up and her father found himself in jail. So, to cope with the tough times, she found running and it soon became her sanctuary.

But this didn’t come without its challenges. After finally finding her niche and seeing the reward for her hard work, her foot started deteriorating, seemingly ending her career.

However, in spite of a hoard of naysayers and a serious injury, Segalle came out of retirement and became one of Europe’s top 400m sprinters.

Naudi drew inspiration from her own battles against adversity dealing with clubfoot, a deformity caused by a shortened achilles tendon that causes the foot to turn inwards and under – and she was subsequently told that she’d never be able to actualise her dreams.

Nonetheless, she went on to perform in the West End and feature in TV series such as Foundation, Mood and the upcoming Litvinenko, as well as By the Sea, the Malta-based romantic drama featuring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

The new mini-series will be directed by Keith Tedesco from Lampa Stampa Films.

Tedesco is also the creator of Uwijja, a film that received a global distribution on VOD platforms in 2022 through Under the Milky Way and which Naudi also featured in.

“During an unprecedented lockdown period we have seen how important the medium of Film and Television has been. Be it a sense of companionship, inspiration, relaxation or hope, people have been turning on their screens day in day out and it’s time for some new exciting content,” Tedesco explained.

“This series is the perfect uplifting, underdog story that would capture the hearts of humans worldwide.”

“This is a story about resilience and tenacity – think Billy Elliot meets Million Dollar Baby, but in Malta,” Tedesco added.

However, the project needs one last funding push to start production.

“By helping us fund this project you can be part of the evolution of Maltese story-telling. We’ve said it time and time again that the Maltese film industry is in its infancy. With your help, maybe we could begin to toddle towards a firmer future that compares Maltese culture and legacy on film to a higher esteem.”

Even though the project is already partially funded, it still needs an additional 40K to secure locations, actors, crew, and gear.

The creators have even ensured that your contribution will not go unrewarded.

When funding the project, you will benefit from a host of perks such as a private premiere link to the series (via Vimeo), executive Producer credits, also on IMDB and 1% share ownership. If the series makes a profit within three years you can get a chance to get your money back plus more (terms and conditions apply).

“Every little bit helps, and if we do not reach the ultimate goal of 40K, the collected amounts, no matter how small, will go towards the principal photography of this production.”
