The 6 Major Don’ts Of A Beach Day In Malta

Never has social life been so hectic as Malta’s summers. With plenty of things to keep us happy and busy throughout the hot months before we go into hibernation mode for the winter, one of the best things to do which will never get old is enjoying a day at the beach.

Whether it’s with all your friends for a fun day out, or just a couple of mates for a relaxing-tanning afternoon, it’s a great way to spend your time. In case you were wondering, though, there are some things that you should definitely avoid doing so you and everyone around you gets to enjoy a day at the beach.

Print this out and stick it up to the fridge.

1. Don’t forget the sunblock

The first and definitely most important point when it comes to beaching it in Malta.

Whoever invented this liquid gold should probably be knighted and have monuments in every nation with insane heat like ours. (Ok so it seems like it might be Austrian scientist Franz Greiter. Thanks Franz!)

We understand that a lot of people go to the beach with the specific reason to get burnt in their need to be the darkest white person of all. However, even if you’re tanning, you need to be aware of the harm the sun can do. If you’re not going to take it from the millions of health announcements you’ve heard this summer, take it from us… the people who forgot to take sunblock that one time, slept on our sides, and woke up looking like the Maltese flag.

2. Don’t go late

Going late to the beach is the opposite of going late to a BBQ.

With one, you’ll come to find there are no more sausages left. With the other, you’ll find a beach littered with sausages. Or in this case, people. But let’s face it; what with the laziness and the sunburn, most of us do end up looking like sausages by the end of a day at the beach.

Turning up late to the beach will leave you annoyed by the lack of space left for you to sit your fine on… and don’t give us that ‘I finish work late’ nonsense; just take some time off, you deserve it.

3. Don’t swim right before leaving

At least not if you forgot to get a change of clothes

The ‘people’ who do this know who they are. They’ve had a whole day to enjoy the sea, do they really need to jump in and get full of sand five seconds before they get into your car? They are horrible people who deserve nothing but to be shames.

“But my swim suit dries really fast”, they’ll tell you. It sure will, when the fires of hell are around you’re trying to explain why you’ve been beaten to death with the smaller part of a plastic umbrella.

4. Do. Not. Litter.

All popular beaches around the island are fitted with helpful recycling bins. There’s really no excuse for leaving a mess on any of the beaches you head to this summer. Do the right thing; get up from your towel, walk to the dustbin while wishing you put on your flip flops, and sort your waste.

5. Don’t leave your items exposed while you swim

Safety should be your number one priority.

Everyone gets that annoying nagging feeling in their stomach when leaving their stuff unattended, especially on the beach. It’s important not to leave any expensive items you may be carrying with you on show. Try to cover your things with your towel, or kindly ask your closest beach neighbours to look over your things. Also leave anything you don’t need in your car.

You might also want to go for one of those waterproof pouches that you hang around your neck. Practical and all swagged out? Check and check.

6. Don’t just light up a BBQ

Contrary to popular belief, the fact that we’re Maltese doesn’t mean we own the beach. Most beaches will allow you to BBQ if you get a permit, and these can usually be requested for at the local council. But don’t just assume that you’d get that permit without even asking for it. You’d be surprised how many people do that.

Please remember not to throw anything in the sea once you’re done, and to save us a pink sausage. Thanks.
