The Cheesiest Nightclubs In Malta You Must Visit At Least Once

Whether you’re looking for a desperate end-of-summer bash or are gearing up for a season of clubbing as the weather (slowly) gets colder, Malta is the perfect place for anything from bar-hopping-turned-wild to fully-fledged partying.

If you don’t know where to start, here are some of the cheesiest clubs which are still standing in Malta, defying time and trends, which you absolutely must go to at least once in your life.

1. Footloose

As great a place to start as ever, especially considering it’s many Maltese people’s first experience of nightlife. There’s something about this cowboy-themed, wooden-everything club in the heart of Paceville’s most famous street that never disappoints. Most Maltese people might remember Footloose as their 00s hangout, but the club is still very happening on a weekly basis, especially with the many language schools all situated very close to it.

Footloose is probably your best bet at catching a Sean Paul song in 2017, so the cheese is as present as ever. A recent addition of VIP tables at the back and the words “Wild Surprising Fun” to the club’s name on its constantly-updated Facebook page make Footloose as evergreen as they get. Well, the interior’s mostly everbrown, but you get our drift.

2. Black & White

Some clubs don’t understand the importance of cheese in people’s lives, and they shy away from it. Black N’ White isn’t one of those clubs. Proudly claiming their love for commercial and house music in their logo, the guys over at B&W host big parts on a daily basis in summer. In winter, the weekends are where it’s at.

The club celebrated its fifth year anniversary back in 2016 and shared photos of a recent renovation earlier this summer, and with regular packed nights, it seems like it might be in for celebrating many more in the years to come.

3. Fuego Casa Latina

If you had to ask a random person on the street what they thought of Fuego, they’ll probably either tell you it’s their favourite club, or their mother’s. A Latino-themed nightclub (as if that name wasn’t enough of a dead giveaway), Fuego is another one of those venues which has stood the test of time. Veterans will remember Fuego from its 90s heydays in Buġibba, but newcomers now have another club; Paceville’s Fuego’s Speakeasy, a rooftop terrace with acoustic sessions and shisha stations aplenty.

Sure, the club does turn up and have nights where the bass gets thumping and the dance music classics come out, but you’re more likely to stumble upon a random salsa session on the dancefloor here. And for whoever’s into that kind of thing, Fuego is a little slice of heaven in Paceville.

4. Café del Mar

Currently one of Malta’s most popular clubs, this lido-turned-outdoor-nightclub dominates the island’s partying scene in summer. Sure, the season’s all but gone now, but with a massive end of summer bash planned for the 8th of October, Café del Mar isn’t going on hibernation without a big bang.

In between the free entrance and the 13 DJs they’ve got lined up for the night, expect all the cheesiest tunes of this summer (and every summer before that) to be blasted out of the poolside speakers.

5. Native Bar

Or as many Maltese people still call it, Bar Native (old habits and all).

You know that one huge Latin hit? The one that goes, “Mosa, mosa, asi voce me mata?” Well, if you’ve ever wanted to listen to that song in a club, just head to Native on any night of the week.

Another bar-turned-club which has outlived many of the venues around it, Native goes from serving delicious food and platters in the morning, to happy hour in the evening, to a fully-fledged, dance-till-you-drop cheesy Latin nightclub at night.

This one also happens to be another firm favourite of the thousands of language students who live in St. Julian’s, and it bears it proudly with multiple flags all over the sprawling interior.

6. Miracles

There are loads of great nightlife hangouts in Buġibba, but most people will mention Miracles first. Bang in the middle of the square in the northern town, Miracles went from a small bar, to a fancy lounge, to an actual nightclub over the last couple of years.

With frequent special guest DJs and a renovated (and recently extended) indoor area, Miracles quickly established itself as the best place for both pre-drinks and afterparties. And hey, if you’re feeling peckish, they recently announced a new menu which includes delicious burgers… with actual cheese.

7. The Funky Monkey

There was a time (that is, last year) when The Funky Monkey quickly established itself as the hottest place to be for the alternative scene. A Manoel Island boċċi club which quickly grew into an actual live music venue, The Funky Monkey saw nearly every single non-mainstream musical act take the stage at least once. Quickly, and luckily, the small scene wasn’t the club’s only clientele.

Now, The Funky Monkey has become so much more than what it was a mere dozen months ago. Regularly welcoming hundreds of foreign patrons from the many gaming companies and language schools situated around Gżira, the place has become the hub of more popular genres, like reggae, hip hop, funk and even the random electronic night.

The Funky Monkey might’ve started as an underground base for all things different (and it thankfully still is on certain nights), but it’s managed to juggle that and good old cheesy fun. And that’s a difficult thing to achieve.

8. Havana

The granddaddy of all cheese in Malta.

Your mother remembers Havana. You remember Havana. And at the rate this Paceville club is going, your children will also remember Havana.

Right next door to Footloose, Havana is one of Malta’s longest-running nightclubs, and is the place to be if you love R&B. If you haven’t been to Paceville in a long time and are looking to relive the good old days, there’s a very big chance you’re going to end up in Havana by the end of the night.

The artificial waterfall on the side of this club’s stairs used to also lead to a hip hop haven, but with that genre’s recent explosion in popularity in Malta, a new club was recently opened downstairs; Havana 808. So yeah, good luck stopping this cheesy overlord when there’s now two of them!
