The Gut, Strait Street’s Legendary Bottom, Is Being Reborn As A Snazzy 1920s Getaway In Valletta
Strait Street in Valletta is famed for being the heart of the Maltese party back in the day – and it might soon return to its former glory after a regeneration project has turned the street into a nightlife hotspot.
If you turn the clock back some decades you would have found a narrow street full of music, life, and a whole lot of dancing.
But as Valletta’s regeneration over the last half decade or so has brought about a lot of change in the capital city, one of the corners of the city that’s changed the most has to be Strait Street.
And not just any part of Strait Street – the lower part of Strait Street, colloquially known as The Gut, has virtually been transformed in a scene right out of the Roaring 1920s’, with live Swing bands, dancers, and cool cocktails livening up the area.
A platform for live bands and singers is the main centrepiece of the alley
You can catch a series of awesome local and foreign musicians playing as you sit back and enjoy the atmosphere.
But don’t sleep on the impressive cocktail bars and their menus
Channeling the 1920s means channeling their awesome cocktails, so go ahead and grab yourself an Old-Fashioned while you’re there
You can also experience a legit blast from the past by seeing one of the original legends from Strait Street performing there tonight
Joe Camilleri aka Il-Bibi used to perform on drums when he started his musical career at the age of 12.
He would entertain people in Strait Street, and he returns to The Gut tonight as part of the Strait Street trio to remind everyone why he is considered one of the great artists to give Strait Street its groove.
