The Statistics Behind Googling ‘Malta’: Who’s Doing It, And Why?

Google Trends is a tool used to show us a relative level of interest on a certain keyword over time. What this means is that, using this tool, we are able to find out a few cool things about who the people who Googled “Malta” are, thanks to the following categories.

1. Interest over time.

Numbers represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for the given region and time. A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term. A value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means that there was not enough data for this term.”

What does this mean?

From a worldwide point of view the term ‘Malta’ was searched mostly during the week between the 27th August and 2nd September. At this point in time ,the search peaked up to almost the maximum at 99.  

Apparently, quite a few people around that time last year were checking up on us to see what we were up to.  They probably couldn’t believe that we had a weeks-long heatwave and wanted to check Google.

2. Interest of Region

See in which location the term ‘Malta’ was most popular during the specified time frame. Values are again calculated on a scale from 0 to 100, where 100 is the location with the most popularity as a fraction of total searches in that location, a value of 50 indicates a location which is half as popular. A value of 0 indicates a location where there was not enough data for this term.

What does this mean?

Unsurprisingly, the term ‘Malta’ was mostly searched by… the people in Malta. 

Fortunately, we are also able to produce a diagram showing which cities and towns in Malta were Googling ‘Malta’ the most, and it turns out Floriana tops the list with a square maximum of 100!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the list, Żebbuġ aren’t too phased about Googling stuff about our country.

The most popular topics users searching for along with the term ‘Malta’. 

Scoring is on a relative scale, where a value of 100 is the most commonly searched topic and a value of 50 is a topic searched half as often as the most popular term, and so on.

What does this mean?

Simply put, the people who searched the term ‘Malta’ also searched the following topics in relation to the term.  

From what we can see, most of the people searching for Malta simply wanted to get more information about us, along with others who wanted to read the news, and a smaller percentage (in comparison to the other searches) looking for flight and holiday information.

Kind of like the above point, but more on the lines of different queries that had some relation to the original term (in this case, ‘Malta’).

What does this mean?

Typically, the people who were searching for ‘Malta’ on Google were interested in mostly our weather, news, and looking for a hotel to stay in.

What we can see here is that these search terms have increased drastically over the past year. And hey, Lovin Malta is on there!

But what does this all mean?

Well, the data is a bit jumbled and all over the place, but it’s nothing particularly out of the ordinary.

We know that typically, people looking for things about Malta are, well, Maltese.

We also know that most of the other people Googling Malta are interested in holidaying here, our news and our current weather. 

Sounds just about right!
