9 Reasons Not To Miss ‘Malta Classic’ This Year
Car lovers rejoice: Malta Classic is returning to Malta this October, gracing our shores with a fleet of over seventy vintage and classic cars. As with previous edition, the event will include the usual Hill Climb, a Concours d’Elegance and a Grand Prix, but will also have several other exciting additions and guests in store.
1. Rewarding your need for speed
Strap yourselves in for Lord Greg Thornton and his Titan Historic Racing team who will be bringing no less than six vintage cars, including a Ford GT40, a Ferrari 308, a Lotus and ex-F1.
Still not impressed? Duncan Micallef, the current holder of the fastest time in Europe for Top Fuel Drag Racing, will for the first time take his skills to Mdina’s curves and bends, driving a 1972 Formula Abarth SE025 and a Renault 5 Turbo.
2. VIP in style
Concerned about getting a tan line from your sunglasses? Kick back and enjoy the race over a glass of prosecco, as you watch a live streaming of the Mdina Grand Prix including drivers’ timing in your own VIP area, at just €50 for one day or €75 for two days.
3. Modern classics category
Young-at-heart or simply young in general? Featuring a slew of cars manufactures after 1976, the modern classic category is sure to give you a kick of nostalgia.
4. Aston Martin DB6
With Mr. Bond’s seal of approval, an Aston Martin is a perfect example of sheer elegance and craftsmanship. This particular model is a recreation of the famous 1958 DBR2, one of which was driven by accomplished British driver Sir Stirling Moss.
5. Ex-formula 1 car racing up Mellieha’s hills
500 BHP on a 635 kg car revving up Mellieha’s hills? Sign us up! Originally built for Formula 1 in 1970 but was later modified to take part in F5000 in the US, the car will now visit Malta as part of the Titan Historic Racing team and will also be on show in Mdina.
6. BMW M3 Cecotto
One of only 505 made, the Cecotto can be considered as unique as its namesake, Johnny Cecotto, who earned the title of youngest World Champion ever at just nineteen years old after winning the 1975 350cc World Championship.
7. Renault 5 Turbo
Claimed to be one of the hot hatch pioneers, this is practically a rally car dropped into a production line. Mid-engined, turbo powered, and fast, this car is expected to give its rivals in the Modern Classics category a tough time
8. Fiat 131 Abarth
The box shaped 131 was not an uncommon sight in Malta until recent years. The Abarth model however earned its reputation on rally tracks in the late 70s thanks to its success winning the World Rally Championship three times, in 1977, 1978 and 1980
9. Ferrari Four
For fans of the Cavallino Rampante, this year we will be seeing four Ferraris during the Malta Classic weekend. A Ferrari 250GT convertible series 2 will be available for viewing at eth Concourse d’Elegance, while a Ferrari 308 GT4, a 308 GTS and a Ferrari Testarossa will compete in the Modern Classics category.
Malta Classic is going down between the 5th and 8th October.
