Eurovision Euphoria, Local Literature And 1,000 Anna Wintours: This Weekend In Malta Has Amazing Activities For Everyone
Another week has come and gone, and now we’re all eagerly waiting to see if our latest local songstress Michela will outperform the competition at the Eurovision semi-finals tonight, or if any more wonderfully meme-able politician moments come out.
But apart from that, we’re all looking forward to another weekend away from work and school where we can fully let our hair down and leave our emails unread. Here are a collection of activities happening around Malta that will help you do just that.
You should not avoid the weekend like the Black Plague.
Friday 17th May
1. Live in a library
Kick off the weekend with a live performance by Maltese musician Alexandra Alden at the Valletta Public Library. Supported by her two Netherlands-based band members, the audience will be taken on a journey through Alden’s musical history, beginning with her debut EP The Curious Child to her latest body of work Wild Honey.
2. Let’s talk arts and class
A German street journal named Art of the Working Class, which showcases “self-reflexive actions about precarious conditions in the arts and discourses of contemporary social dynamics”, is celebrating its sixth edition in Blitz, Valletta, with a public talk with the AWC editors Maria Ines Lazo Plaza and Sara Dolfi Agostini and the Blitz director Alexandra Pace.
3. Join this sick party
Black Plague V is back at Beachaven for more dancing, drinking and a whole lot of heavy, contemporary hip hop.
Seeing you through the night is an incredible line-up of DJs, featuring local talents I.YOU and Supre, among others. Their sets are simply infectious so be sure you don’t miss out! Oh, and now that the pun I made earlier makes sense, you’re welcome.
4. Break Free from daily stresses
With a show by one of the best Queen Tribute Bands in Europe, Break Free. Hosted by Ghaxaq Music Event, the band is set to play some of Queen’s greatest hits, so get ready because Long Live The Queen will rock you.
5. How about a critically acclaimed opera?
Spazju Kreattiv is hosting two performances, on Friday 17th and Sunday 19th May, of the massively successful opera Dialogues des Carmélites, composed by Francis Poulenc who created the score to address both the internal and external struggles of the characters.
Saturday 18th May
6. Eurovision everywhere
With so much hype around this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, many places around the island will be publicly screening the show so that you can enjoy great company, food and drinks while happily shouting CHAMA-CHAMELEON! at the top of your lungs (if Michela gets in to the Finals of course, which we all hope actually happens).
Some of the places you can watch the show include:
7. It’s a fashion-forward Saturday
The 32nd edition of the popular LGBTQ+ party LOLLIPOP promises to feature 1,000 Anna Wintours!
Break out your best outfits and most photo-worthy VOGUE face and get ready to par-tay! This month, they will also be screening the Eurovision Final, so there’s even more to look forward to.
8. Have a Odd time this Saturday
After a two-year hiatus, the infamous party Oddball Malta is back with an all-new, talented line-up, featuring “Rotterdam’s best kept secret in Techno” Stranger. You definitely don’t want to miss this epic return to form!
9. Expand your knowledge of different cultures
Aġenzija Żgħażagħ is celebrating the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity by having foreign residents present different parts of their culture and community. There’s going to be discussions, talks, food, and loads of opportunities for learning, so be sure to check it out if you get the chance.
Sunday 19th May
10. How do you take your parties?
Well I like them Sunny Side Up, and this daytime party has really stepped up their game this year, bringing the amazing international performer Makam, who specialises in everything from house to techno music.
11. Day drinking done right
Gianpula Village is the location for the latest Boozy Brunch. With DJs such as Carlo Gerada and Alvin Gee, great American food and many alcohols, it’s sure to be a blast!
12. Celebrate the launch of a new style of music video
The song Quiet Sun is the newest single from international performer and aerospace engineer Leonardo Barilaro. Featuring contemporary fusion dancer Thea Cunningham and brilliant guitarist Marino Di Nino, you do not want to miss the celebration for this ground-breaking video.
13. Enjoy a little local literature
Ħares Rużann – Bħalma Dejjem Int Ħarist is the work of 18-year-old writer and director Jamie Cardona, who used new characters and contemporary twists to create a pop version remake of literary classic short novel Il-Ħarsa ta’ Rużann by Francis Ebejer. And don’t worry Maltese O-Level students; no studying is required for this one!
