Flowers, Gin, Rock And The Eurovision: 12 Events To Attend In Malta In The Coming Days

You might still be recovering from all the events you managed to go to last weekend, but get ready for another very busy weekend. 

This month has a lot to offer in terms of events and entertainment, and most of it seems to be packed in the next couple of days. Get your going-out bag ready; here are 12 events happening around Malta this weekend.

Thursday 10th May

Pig out and cringe at the comfort of your own home… with Lovin Malta!

If you’d rather watch the Eurovision from the comfort of your home, you should really tune in to the Lovin Malta Eurovision Live Commentary. Chucky, Chris, Tim and Matt will be discussing the show and throwing all the shade in the world. A long-awaited exhibition opening giving anticipation boners to everyone

If you’re not big on Eurovision, you can go and watch one of the most heavily anticipated exhibitions of this year. V e r n a c u l a r will be opening tonight and will be showcasing works of the spectacular Karen Caruana.

The exhibition will stay open until the 26th of May and is curated by Sabrina Calleja Jackson. 

Friday 11th May

Jam to some reggae tunes in honour of the biggest name in the game

There will be two stages at the event and 12 performers. Yes, twelve. The Bob Marley tribute will start at 19.00 and will keep going till late. Freedom Fighters, Slackliner Malta, DJ Onns, Johnshanty, Ras Embassy and Peter Azzopardi among others. 

Appreciate the finer things in life… gin and live music, that is

Bombay Sapphire Malta and Kingsway Valletta are organising a Gin soak for everyone to attend. Happy hour will take place at 5pm where you can buy one drink and get the other free. Live music will be performed by Mikaela from 7:30pm onwards.

Get your Hip Hop fix with some sick tunes… and a legend

This weekend, DJ Jazzy Jeff will be playing at Aria Complex. The 90’s MC will be playing at the event and kicking off the Straight Outta Hip Hop summer tour sessions at Aria.

Feel elegant and sophisticated while listening to live jazz music

International jazz artists from around Europe and Malta will be performing at the jazz extravaganza at Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta. 

The European Jazz Jamboree will feature names like Sandro Zerafa, Bertil Strandberg, Avarino Cirinna, Dominic Galea, Luca Fattorini, Charles ‘City’ Gatt, Orqazio Maugeri and Giovanni Morello. 

Entrance to the event will be free.

Saturday 12th May

A potentially crucial night for three Maltese representatives 

If things go the way many Maltese people are hoping on Thursday night, Saturday night will see Christabelle and Jessika, two Maltese singers, participate at the Eurovision Finals. In case you haven’t noticed, the CityLights Cinema will be airing the finals live. You can go hang out with fellow Eurovision fans at the historic Valletta cinema, but to avoid disappointment you should book your tickets on [email protected].

Alternatively, remember that it’s also a big night for Emma Muscat, the young trailblazing Maltese singer who faces potential elimination during the final stages of Amici, which she’s been dominating till now.

Get your street art and good music fix for free

The Malta Street Art Collective this weekend will be giving you a good thick slice of Upper Crust at the Msida Skatepark. There will be Live Graffiti and street art productions by SeaPuppy, DNS Crew, Bembi, Safe, TOWN, Slime, Otto, Cooker, Trisd and Marcmix among others.

Skateboard and breakdance competitions will start from noon and will last till 6:30pm. Bila and Double Standard will also be performing during the event. 

The event will continue on Sunday with BMX competitions.

Experience the power of għana with Maltese performers on stage

Teatru Malta never seem to disappoint — this weekend, they will be hosting Ilħna Mitlufa at the Teatru Salesjan. This not to be missed event (over two nights) will explore għana in a modern setting, taking the audience back to its musical roots. 

Get your hay fever pills; we’re going to smell some beautiful flowers

Triq Anton Buttiġieġ in Iklin will be hosting this flowery event which will include up to 10,000 flowers, band marches and even Mother’s Day crafts for kids. People are encouraged to attend along with any family pets they wish to bless with the power of God. 

Stands will be installed throughout the event serving rosemary drinks, flower cakes and fruits for everyone to enjoy.

Sunday 13th May

Go back in time and witness the ravages of war 

The Żejtun Local Council will be organising an event to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the  town square tragedy. The town square will be transformed to look the same way as it did at the time of the second World War, there will be reenactments, car shows and exhibitions related to the Second World War.

Victory Kitchen food will be given out for free to those attending in order to make the experience complete.

Have the most important meal of the day in a quirky and fun way

Breakfast will be served in an open-air setting near the archeological site of Għar Dalam this Sunday. A guided tour of the surrounding areas will be presented — giving you a taste of archaeological and historical features around the Għar Dalam area. Underground cisterns, a 17th Century farmhouse, Casa Ippolito and the foundations of a Roman Villa will be part of the guided tour which will take place from 8am till noon.
