January is almost over and there’s no better way to say bye-bye to the first month of 2020 than with a jampacked weekend.

The 2020 techno season has gotten off to a nice start with a high profile duo act making their way to Malta this weekend. There’s also a senior lecturer of art history giving an interesting talk on Maltese tattoo culture and a Swedish beer tasting session for all you low-key alcoholics.

Whether you’re an English breakfast or peppermint kind of guy, there’s something on this list that will be your cup of tea.

Friday 24th January

1. A techno takeover

Top local artists come together for a tasty night of techno at one of Malta’s favourite all-year-round club, Liquid.

Playing on the night are Abject, Reficult, Aspekt, Etched, Antidote, manthrax, Sleeps Everywhere and Darren.

2.  Hard Rock Haven

Maltese hard rock band Lighthouse will be performing all the classic hard rock hits, from Guns & Roses to the RHCP, in their debut at The Beer Cave in Valletta.

3. Gozo rocks!

Rock and roll cover band The Stents will be performing at Ferdie’s Cocktail Bar in Għajnsielem.

With a sprinkle of Bowie, T Rex as well as a pinch of their original music too, this weekend at Gozo is gonna rock.

4. A night of beer tasting

Lager-enthusiasts Beer Head will be hosting a beer tasting bonanza this Friday with a tasting session of six craft beers brewed Swedish brewery Poppels.

Saturday 25th January

5. Throwback to the 70s

A tribute to one of the best decades in music, The Garage will be hosting a 70s party featuring hits from Bowie to Black Sabbath and everything in between.

6. The time to go emo has come again

It may be 2020 but we’re still rocking that emo vibe.

Malla and I.YOU are coming out of the shadows to play all their tear-jerking screamo emo tracks that defined our childhood this Saturday and we’ve already got our black eyeliner on.

Music kicks off at 9 pm but the emo kids will be going on well into the night.

7. A journey of contemporary techno

Glaswegian DJ duo act ‘Slam’ have toured clubs and festivals around the world but this weekend they’ll be bringing the house down at Gianpula’s newly-refurbished Clubhouse.

8. A public lecture on tattoos and japonisme

REL•INK Indelible Narratives together with the Malta Maritime Museum, Heritage Malta will be hosting a public lecture on Tattooing and Japonisme: High-Class Commodity Tattooing in the late 19th Century, a presentation by world-renowned by art history lecturer Dr. Matt Lodder.

Sunday 26th January

9.  A pub quiz to close things off

Everyone loves a good pub quiz and what a great way to end the weekend with friends and family. The Hatter will be hosting their €1 quiz and that’s not even the best part, it’s Sangria Sunday!
