A group of independent Maltese artists are lending their voices to stories from Gaza as a fundraising initiative to support Palestinian children dealing with the trauma of war.

Renowned actors Simone Spiteri, Thomas Camilleri, Antonella Mifsud, Rebecca Camilleri, Philip Leone Ganado, Robyn Vella, and Aidan Aquilina, under the direction of Jean Marc Agius, will present rehearsed readings from the Gaza Monologues.

Gaza Monologues is an international project advocating for the rights of children in Gaza by Ashtar Theatre and based on personal stories of a group of children from Gaza. The monologues have been performed across 80 cities in 40 countries. The actors will also share works written in the past weeks by children and young people experiencing war in Gaza.

The fundraising initiative supported by Spazju Kreattiv and produced by Toni Attard, follows an urgent appeal by Al-Harah Theatre for support amidst ongoing crises and challenges faced by the Palestinian community.

Established in 2005 as a nonprofit organisation, Al-Harah Theater has produced highly artistic, yet accessible theatre productions and presented them to audiences throughout Palestine, the Arab world and beyond. The war on Gaza forced the theatre to swiftly adapt its programmes, initiating psycho-social drama activities aimed at aiding 8- to 12-year-old students in processing their emotions and trauma.

‘Since the beginning of the war on Gaza, schools in the West Bank have not been operating regularly, and as schools reopen, children are suffering from fear and trauma from all the news they are hearing about war, hostilities, aggression on Palestinian cities, Israeli settler’s violence against entire communities, and the like’, said Marina Barham, General Director of Al-Harah theatre.

As a result, there has been an increasing demand from the local schools towards psychological interventions with the children. Funds raised from the event in Malta will help the theatre deliver drama therapy sessions to children in the Bethlehem area and support artists in Gaza.

Gaza Monologues will be held at Spazju Kreattiv on 20th and 21st January at 8pm.

Free tickets for the event are available from http://bit.ly/3vpz3OK and donations may be given on https://gogetfunding.com/thegazamonologuesmalta/.
