Meteor Showers Are Coming! And There Are Already Two Observation Events Happening In Malta

Article Featured Image

If you’ve noticed some bright shooting stars lately, it’s because the annual Perseid meteor shower has already started and will reach its peak in less than a fortnight.

Maltese astronomy enthusiasts are planning their observation sessions on the night between the 12th and 13th August, when Malta is expected to reach peak shooting star visibility between 2am and 4am.

The Earth Systems Association and the Science Students’ Society will be heading to Dingli Cliffs while the Astronomical Society of Malta and the Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy, will be heading to Miġra l-Ferħa in Rabat.

Unfortunately, this year the moon will be three-quarters full so only the brighter meteors will be visible – even though some websites have claimed that this year should have been the brightest in recent history.

Either way, if you want to enjoy the show, just make sure you get to a dark area and prepare to camp out for a few hours! And if you’re taking any fancy photos, remember to send them to us on [email protected]
