‘I Worry About What Malta Has Become’: Maltese Comedy Heavyweight To Headline Stand-Up Show ‘For Truth And Justice’

Comedy and activism might not often go hand-in-hand in Malta, but an upcoming show in Attard hopes to bring them a little closer together.

Activist group Occupy Justice and blogger-journalist Manuel Delia have teamed up to organise a live stand-up session featuring none other than popular Maltese funnyman Steve Hili.

The London-based professional comedian is known for his mischievous humour and nob gags, so having him headline such a show might seem weird at first. But speaking to Lovin Malta, Hili argued that accepting a show like this only proved that this really is his job.

“In my life, I have only ever voted AD or drawn a dick on my vote”

“I am a comedian, and my job is to laugh at sacred cows like authority figures,” Hili told Lovin Malta. “As a comedian, you should do that.”

“When I was approached, I made it clear that I was not in the business of being used by any political party and I was not going to tamper any of my views,” Steve continued. “And they agreed.”

“I have never been a fan of either of the two big political parties,” Hili elaborated. “In fact, I was beaten up by members of the MZPN when I was at university. So anyone who interprets me being part of this event as having sympathy for the Nationalist Party or any faction within it is very wide of the mark. In my life I have only ever voted AD or drawn a dick on my vote. Both options were reached after intense deliberation and they both had the same result on the outcome of the elections!”

“I worry about what Malta has become”

“I didn’t really need to do this,” Steve Hili told Lovin Malta, contemplating on an extremely busy couple of months ahead. “In fact it would have been easier if I hadn’t; I would’ve had less material to write in what is a very busy time of the year!”

“But I worry about what Malta has become – a country venomously bickering with itself on Facebook and incapable of seeing anything outside of red- or blue-tinted specs whilst the big boys ride roughshod over everyone. The [db Group] debacle for instance. The whole country should be up in arms about this but they are not. Why? Because we are in a situation that is a result of both political parties trying (and succeeding) over many many years to control our minds. People won’t protest if their party is in power. Everything has to be ‘Us vs Them’. And the capacity to see things rationally is lost.”

“The jokes I have written about Malta and the Maltese situation reflect what I think,” Hili explained. “How will it all go down, we shall see!”

Steve Hili takes to the stage on Sunday 7th October in the open-air pjazza next to Attard’s Saracino’s. €15 tickets include tapas and finger food… along with an opportunity to watch the Maltese comedian rip the country a new one, of course.
