In Photos: Swieqi’s ‘Haunted House’ Is Back Tonight And It’s Looking Scarier Than Ever

Jean Paul and Johanna Barthet really know how to go all out on Halloween, with their Swieqi house gradually becoming the most popular trick-or-treating stop in the area. This year, the couple are back with a bang, and for a very good cause.
Every year, the Barthets turn their home into an elaborate haunted house, even constructing a tunnel dozens of metres long in their front garden.
This year’s theme is all about a creepy dollhouse, and it already looked scary in broad daylight while preparations were still ongoing. We can only imagine how much scarier it’s going to look like tonight when it all kicks off.

Dare to descend?

Visitors will have to navigate their way along the haunted house, and yes; that creepy armchair is there to stay

A little bit of mannequin madness always works wonders

Creepy Easter eggs like this one will be everywhere you look… so don’t forget to look over your shoulder

If this looked terrifying at noon, imagine what it’s going to look like after the sun has set and creepy music starts coming out of that speaker

Not a big fan of dolls? Well, you’re in for quite the treat… or trick.

Reach out and touch fear

The long tunnel to freedom is back, plus darkness and a couple of scary surprises along the way
This year will also see the Swieqi couple hiring costume actors to add to the vibe, with hundreds of children expected to visit.
They’ve also found a way to turn the event into a good cause, raising money for Cystic Fibrosis.
“This started off as a joke many years ago,” JP wrote on the project’s Zaar crowdfunding page. “Actually, I was just killing time as Johanna took the kids trick or treating. Now it’s an annual appointment, visited by both young and old – one I cannot forgo. Many tell us it’s a must – they have to visit us on their trick-or-treat outing on Halloween night!”
Through their crowdfunding page, the couple has already raised more than €1,250 before the event. The sum is expected to soar once entrants are asked to leave a donation of their choice upon visiting the haunted house. Donations will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

As you might expect, preparing such an elaborated haunted house is a very tiring experience. The Barthets have in fact been at it for six whole days, with last-minute preparations being added over Monday and Tuesday.
“We were actually close to not hosting it this year,” Johanna told Lovin Malta when we visited the house earlier today. “I was sure that last year was going to be the last,” JP said on the crowdfunding page. “But the more I think about it, the more I remember the looks on your faces as you are about to enter, the screams as you pass through, I can not but help myself to another year!”
The Swieqi Haunted Dollhouse will be opening its doors on Swieqi Road at 5:30pm tonight and can be visited till 9pm.
