It’s Back! Kerċem’s Hillside Mega Christmas Tree Returns In All Its 180-Metre Glory

Instagram bucketlisters, your next go-to destination for the festive period is on Malta’s sister island!

The sleepy town of Kerċem has returned with its massive Christmas tree, challenging every other Maltese town and village for title of largest and most impressive festive tree on the islands.

At a staggering 180 metres, the behemoth tree at Għar Ilma, on the side of a hill outside Kerċerm, is made up of some 4,000 lights, and is a true sigh to behold.

Sharing a glorious photo of the tree from last year’s unveiling, local forecasting page Malta Weather got the social media ball rolling earlier this week, attracting a large number of comments and shares.

Some people even reportedly being able to spot the massive tree from a plane, showing just how huge the beautiful festive decoration really is.

Last week, Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana announced the return of the Kerċem tree in all its glory, and it’s looking better than ever

“Here it is again,” Caruana said on Facebook in the opening days of December, sharing an awesome aerial shot of the tree and urging people to choose Malta’s sister island for their festive celebrations.

Last year, the Kerċem tree was vandalised mere days after being unveiled, with dozens of lights being stolen from the installation. The theft was described by the Kerċem Local Council as a “shameful act of vandalism”, but it’s great to see that this didn’t deter them from putting up the beautiful decoration once more.

Ta’ Kerċem was one of the earliest places to be inhabited on Gozo, with archaeological discoveries going back some 7,000 years.

To this day, Kerċem remains a tiny village of just 1,700 people, but its close proximity to the south-east edge of Rabat has put it in a constant position of culture relevance. And if you were looking for perfect proof of that, take the fact that they’ve got a 180-metre Christmas tree made up of 4,000 lights on the side of a hill.

Our recommendation? Head over to Gozo ASAP and get your hands on some awesome Instagram uploads… and hey, enjoy some Christmas downtime on the sister island!
