Let’s Hope The Rain Holds Off! Birgu’s Favourite October Tradition Is Back This Weekend To Get The City Lit AF

Cancelling a much-anticipated event due to bad weather is something Birgufeset understands all too well. Last year, the traditional festival was cancelled amidst an October storm, and the island bowed its head in grief.

This year, though, it looks like the weather might just hold off for us and we’ll be able to enjoy a weekend of candlelit festivities that’s been much needed for over a year now!

The tradition, that sees Birgu’s stores open their doors until late in the autumn evening, is organised by the local council and invites all residents in the area to line the streets with beautiful mason jar candles.

Birgufest is a celebration of culture and art within Malta and the Three Cities.

The area, but specifically Vittoriosa (Birgu’s OG name) is considered to be one of Malta’s most picturesque areas – and for good reason, too.

Birgufest originally started as a few small localised events but soon garnered enough popularity to develop into a much larger programme.

This year, Friday and Saturday evenings will see live music acts take to the stage, with the first night building up to a performance from local acoustic duo Xarulù.

Saturday evening will be fronted by local acts SterjoTipi and Ozzy Lino, with several other acts performing throughout the streets of the city.

Kylie Coleiro, Sacred Music Brass and the Joy Gospel Choir will be taking you through the night on Saturday, too. Every street and house will be lit up, chandeliers will hang in the alleys and music will ruminate down each winding path.

Museums and other historical sites in the area will be open for a longer period and offer discounted entries.

And yes, that includes the gloriously bastioned Fort St Angelo in the entre of the Grand Harbour.

Birgufest brings out the best of the Three Cities, and it only takes a short scroll through Instagram to confirm this.
