Another week has come and gone, and with it the clouds and dust have been swept away from Malta. So with the sun shining and a nice breeze playing with our hair, here are some events that will help you take advantage of this weekend’s beautiful weather.
Thursday 9th May
1. A city in green
Valletta (or at least St. George’s Square) is being transformed back into a green paradise this weekend, and it all kicks off today.
The sixth edition of the Valletta Green Festival has returned to Malta, with the aim to raise awareness about the dangers of single-use plastics while using floral arrangements to show the beauty of our islands and the dangers of pollution.
Friday 10th May
2. Learn the experiences of the island’s refugees
Our Island II: Personal Accounts of Refugees in Malta consists of an eye-opening and heartbreaking collection of stories from refugees that passed through or stayed in Malta.
Some stories talk about the fears of not having proper documentation, while others describe the “pure joy” at being reunited with family members.
3. The odds of metal are in your favour
The Aria complex will be hosting the launch of a new slot game named after power metal band Sabaton.
The band will actually be performing the first concert of their new tour at Aria on Friday before going on to perform at massive festivals like Rock Am Ring in Germany and Hellfest in France.
4. Mechs, Techs and Robotics
The Malta Robotics Olympiad (MRO) and Gadgets Expo is back and better than ever. With amazing activities, great gadgets and terrific technology, you don’t want to miss any of the exciting exhibitions. And rumour has it that an Aibo dog will be in attendance, which is the goodest machine ever!
5. You could smell the emotions
The contemporary dance performance Perfume is here to delight and entertain as the award winning Moveo Dance company are bringing an incredible adaptation of the Patrick Suskind novel of the same name.
The performance, choreographed by Dorian Mallia, explores the emotional power and meaning behind different smells.
Saturday 11th May
6. Wine and dine up in the air
The super popular Dinner in the Sky restaurant is reopening for the summer to offer patrons a dining experience which is unique to Malta, overlooking the beautiful Valletta cityscape.
7. Some pre-summer competition on the beach
The 2019 Beach Volley Fest is here, and with the weather looking better and better by the day, it’s set to be a fantastic day out in the sun.
Featuring a 68-team volleyball tournament, music throughout the day and plenty of alcohol, this festival is expected to be great fun for players and spectators alike.
8. A Finesse-d reopening
The Finesse Summer Opening is being held at the 1926 Beach Club and will feature a great line-up of local and foreign DJs to light up the night such as Germany’s DJ Gent and local Nikki Vella Petroni.
There will also be a special guest in MC Vocab Leon all the way from Amsterdam!
9. A call to empty the tanks
“Marine entertainment parks have no place in our world anymore.” That’s how Animal Liberation Malta prefaced their latest activity, Empty The Tanks!
Taking to the Buġibba Square on Saturday afternoon, activists will be protesting against the exploitation of dolphins, whales and sea lions as part of a worldwide event kicking off just after 5:30pm.
10. A night of indie
The alternative scene’s biggest DJs are all congregating at Sliema’s Cloudberry for a long night of indie, electro and dance-along anthems.
Fun levels? Off the charts.
Sunday 12th May
11. Watch a film with your precious life-giver
Eden’s Cinemum have returned with a day of arts & crafts, entertainment… and films, of course!
While this event will also be going down on Saturday, drop by on Sunday morning to celebrate Mother’s Day in style.
Films on show include Peppa Pig: Festival Of Fun, Dumbo and A Dog’s Journey.
