The Year Of The Podcast Is Upon Us: Maltese Shows You Definitely Need To Start Tuning In To

Absorbing information on a daily basis has become increasingly difficult in this day and age. So much is going on all around us, that sitting down to give our undivided attention to something that’s longer than a couple of minutes feels close to impossible. That vacuum is where the phenomenon of podcasts was born… and it looks like things are finally kicking off in Malta.

Essentially a series of episodes mostly made up of audio files that can be downloaded to computers and mobile devices, podcasts have been a part of how people interact with each other for years now, but it always felt like the island was a bit lagging when it came to the number of shows available.

Now, from informative explainers, intriguing debates and nonsensical comedy shows, Malta seems to have gotten its own fair share of podcasts. If you’re still unsure where to begin, though, here are five very good starts.

1. RecTalk

In the first episode of this video podcast series, Mark Cassar sat with The Pain Clinic’s Dr Andrew Agius and in-house specialist Dr Chris Gauci to discuss all things medical cannabis.

If this one-hour episode is anything to go by, it’s going to be a very promising and interesting run for RecTalk.

2. Isles Of The Left

Promising to extend the public debate on the changes that Malta keeps experiencing (and their social consequences), this IotL Magazine podcast is presented as everything from discussions on social and economic issues, to “audio essays” of just over 10 minutes and readings of poems by locals like Maria Theuma.

3. Clueless

Two brothers and a best friend, IQ tests, pregnancy simulators and a whole lot of banter.

“We honestly have no idea what we’re doing, so we’re just doing it,” Clueless’ Mike Bonello Ghio had told Lovin Malta of the show’s improvised insanity. And that’s exactly why we love it.

Three episodes later, Clueless started debuting some highlight videos on Lovin Malta. Featured below? A Hot Ones-inspired sit down with chicken nugget aficionado Valentina Rossi. Priceless.

4. Radju ?aj

What do you get when you throw a bunch of unnamed Maltese guys, some guests, some munchies and a beer or five?

A beautiful mess that’ll make you feel like you’re just chilling on the sofa, laughing your ass off at a couple of inside jokes you somehow understand… and grinning in confusion at the ones you don’t.

5. Good Faith

Did you know? Our very own Chris Peregin now has a podcast!

Now already on its sixth episode, Good Faith promises conversations with people who mean well, have something interesting to say and know how to say it.

From surrogacy and HIV to social anxiety and some good old heavy political shit, challenge your ideas and beliefs by listening in to what the other side has to say.

BONUS: Muzika Mod Ie?or

Sure, Malta might finally be getting more used to the idea of podcasts, but some have been doing it for ages.

Case in point: Toni Sant of MMI. Showcasing the latest songs and music videos from all over the islands, the podcast is currently on episode 546.

Yes, five hundred forty six.
