‘There’s No One Like Him’: Malta’s Top DJs Are All Coming Together This Saturday To Support ‘The Godfather Of Maltese Radio’

Anyone who’s spent more than a couple of months in Malta’s radio industry has heard the name Terry Farrugia before. An airwave staple since the early 90s, the man behind the successful show Terry Time started a long and tough battle with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia back in 2016.

After the disease returned and as medical fees in the US continued to rise, all of Malta’s biggest personalities started coming out in support of the local legend… and it’s all culminating in a grand event this weekend.

This Saturday, Malta’s top DJs will be coming together for one memorable party at Aria, all to support their close friend and inspiration Terry

“If Maltese radio had to have a godfather, Terry would be that man,” DJ and personality Frank Zammit told Lovin Malta. “His love for radio and the way he can make the medium work is something I have always been in awe of.”

“There is no one like Terry on this island when it comes to radio and media,” DJ Nate Darmanin told Lovin Malta. “He looks into the little details that no one cares about, and the knowledge and wisdom we got and still get from the man is unparallaled. The man is truly irreplaceable.”

“He has done so much for me and for the local broadcasting scene that he deserves all our help and respect,” seasoned musician-DJ Gianni Zammit continued.

“He was always very creative and had a wide vision about what audiences wanted, someone to observe and learn from,” fellow industry heavyweight Colin Fitz commented.

Frank, Nate, Gianni and Colin are four of this Saturday’s stellar line-up of DJs and personalities who are all coming together to support Terry

But if there’s one defining quality that everyone in the industry mentions, it’s Terry’s unique way of seeing the best in everyone and inspiring everyone around him

“He manages to extract the very best out of everybody he takes under his wing,” Frank Zammit said. “I had already been doing radio and TV for a number of years before I met him, and he made me rethink all I thought I had learnt.”

“He was one of the people who believed in me when I kicked off my radio career at a young age,” Nate elaborated. “He gave me my first proper radio job at Bay and I ultimately followed him to Vibe FM and started working on our current show.”

“Terry has been a part of my radio life from Day 1 back in 1992,” Gianni reminisced.

Colin Fitz had even more stories from those early days.

“I met Terry in 1991 as part of the group of selected candidates for the then-new Island Sound Radio, which was set to launch in March 1992,” Fitz said. “It was immediately obvious that he was very much at home on radio and would go on to great things. I worked with for two or three years until he was asked to manage Bay Radio, and after shining on-air at Island Sound, he very quickly and successful moved into the management chair, helping to make that station into a huge success.”

“I am better at what I do simply because Terry worked his magic on me too!” Frank poetically finished.

Back in January, Malta’s radio personalities had joined forces to launch a crowdfunding page to help the Maltese legend with the rare and expensive treatment he required.

And while Terry Time has already raised the amazing amount of €153,000, it’s unfortunately still a ways to go until the €500,000 target. Which is why everyone’s coming together for a bit of a boost this weekend.

On Saturday, Aria will see performances by Tony Tony, Simon B, Oz & Jay, Colin Fitz, Gianni, Pierre Cordina, Ian Lang, Carlo Borg Bonaci, Nate and Ziggy, in a night that really is all about honouring Terry

And as if that wasn’t enough, Frank and Drew will be taking care of MCing duty all night long. Check out the stellar line-up below and get planning!

“Words will of course never be enough to express how we feel about all the support that we’ve had from you all”

In a touching post thanking everyone for the tremendous amount of support being sent their way, the Terry Time Trust Facebook page recently shared a statement by Terry and Krista, who said they were “feeling encouraged now that Terry has started the new treatment”.

“With all of you behind us, we remain hopeful and faithful,” the emotional post finished.

Tickets for the event will be available at the door, and will serve as €10 or €25 donations against a regular or VIP entrance respectively
