Three Of Malta’s Biggest Bands Confirmed For New Fundraising Music Festival

Even if you don’t religiously follow Malta’s music scene, there’s a very big chance you would’ve heard about some of its greatest acts. Brikkuni, Beangrowers and Brodu are definitely three such bands, and they’ve just been confirmed as the three headlining acts of a new music festival with an awesome initiative.

The three local giants will be playing their best hits (and some newer numbers) at Rock for Richmond, a newly-announced mini music festival in aid of the awesome Richmond Foundation. The foundation, which is celebrating its 25th year of activity, has done a lot to raise awareness on mental health issues in Malta, and this latest event sees it tapping into the local alternative music scene. This particular mini-festival is being organised with the hope of raising funds towards the building of the foundation’s new kids’ centre.

The festival, which is slated for Friday 7th September (the eve of a public holiday), will be held in the yard at Mount Carmel Hospital… itself a powerful message.

Brikkuni have been an alternative powerhouse for the last decade, with their larger-than-life frontman Mario Vella spearheading the band through three critically acclaimed albums which seem to only get better by time. They’re currently in the process of writing new material which they teased to fans during this year’s Earth Garden performance.

Brodu, on the other hand, are a stripped-down five-piece that have managed to steal the hearts of the entire local music scene with their disarming lyrics and catchy melodies, especially when sung by loveable main man Mark ‘iz-Zizza’ Abela.

Beangrowers definitely need no introduction. The trio shot to fame way back in the 90s, and their influence in Malta is still strongly felt nowadays. Back then, they had even made it to international festivals like Texas’ South By Southwest (three times in a row, nonetheless!), so you can only imagine what effect they had on budding musicians back home. The band’s Alison and Ian are still active in other musical projects like The Shh and Bark Bark Disco.

More details on Rock For Richmond have yet to be released, and the organisers have teased more acts to be announced at a later date.

However, with the holy trinity of Bs already joining the line-up, you know it’s going to be one for the books.
