Once a year (since April 2017), Valletta undergoes a radical cosmetic and temporal makeover, transporting city-roamers to the glamour of way back when with an event that transcends age or interest – the Valletta Concours d’Elegance classic car show.

Yes, it’s that time of year again, when Malta’s distinct and collective love of vintage and classic cars waves its enthusiast flag. This event gives local auto-enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase their beloved vintage vehicles throughout a day that celebrates their passion within Valletta’s picturesque environs.

The event organisers encourage the participation of both local and international entrants to this elegant showcase event, in a bid to present a day that blends “automotive craftsmanship and design across a number of decades with the passion of classic car ownership”.

The Concours d’Elegance is intended to capture the celebratory camaraderie that ignites whenever a bunch of earnest car enthusiasts are gathered together in one place at one time. There’s also a competitive element to the day, with a team of independent foreign judges with considerable relevant experience in similar lending their expertise to the judging process.

The Valletta Concours d’Elegance competitive categories for 2019 have been grouped as follows: Pre-War; Pre-1942; Post-War 1945-1960; Sports Car (Open Top & GT) 1945-1980; Preservation (Original) up to 1980; Popular Classic 1960-1975; Modern Classic 1981-1986; American Cars 1945-1973; and finally, an award for best Period Costume.

All the varying participating vehicles have been listed, and it remains to be seen who the judges will pick as top of the vintage crop, their decisions being based on a predetermined set of criteria.

The winners of each category will then vie for the prestigious overall winners’ trophy.

The overall winner of the Concours d’Elegance will be the entry adjudged to be The Best in Show, and the judging panel will focus primarily on originality and authenticity as well as attention to design, styling, elegance and state of preservation, among others.
