Following the success of their performances of Grease, Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar, Teatru Astra in Gozo is blessing us with their fourth musical. And this time it’s one of Biblical proportions.

For one weekend only, a stellar cast of Maltese and Gozitan performers will hit the Astra stage for a performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Starring local superstar Thomas Camilleri as the man himself, the musical follows the story of Joseph and his “coat of many colours” from the book of Genesis in the Old Testament. It’s the work of musical theatre legends Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and was actually their first musical to be publicly performed.

The Astra version is being directed by Chris Gatt, who has directed all the Astra musicals before this. Other notable cast members include Chantelle Micallef Grimaud as the Narrator, and Chris Dingli as Pharaoh.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (JATATD for short, because it’s a long-ass name) is perhaps one of the most extra musicals of all time

Full of colour, glitter, the campiest of songs, and loads of jazz hands. Choreography for this version of JATATD is in the hands of Francesco Nicodeme, and costumes by Miriam Attard, George Camilleri and Ina Zammit.

And if you need proof of how extra it really is, here’s an example from the 1999 film version.

We’re living for the over-smiling and coat-swirling.

JATATD will be performed at the Teatru Astra in Victoria, Gozo on the 29th, 30th and 31st of March

You can purchase tickets here, but hurry up because they’re going fast!

The musical is promising to be of an extremely high standard, living up to the success of previous performances. And it’s also the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a day on the sister island with your friends and family.
