This Instagram Post Will Give You All The Malta Feels

An Australian couple that gave up everything to sail across the world and document their adventures on Instagram have shared some amazing love for Malta – a great reminder not to take everything we’ve got for granted.

One shot stole most of the attention. Elayna Carausu posted a photo of herself at Marina Di Valletta, focusing on the bastions behind her, and it quickly amassed more than 5,000 likes.

The caption was everything: “Erase myself and the yacht behind me from this image and there you have a fortress. There were pirates here and roman legions, old ships, slaves, Christians, medieval medicine, ideas, pagans, trade, Nazi bombs and revolution. Malta is the centre of the Mediterranean and was the centre of the world for a while. This is what I love about traveling in Europe.”

Isn’t that a great reminder of Malta’s rich and beautiful history?

Elayna travels with her partner Riley Whitelum under the brand name Sailing La Vagabonde and have been sailing the world since 2014 despite having no previous experience on, or even around, a sailboat.

“We’ve suffered terrifying storms, pirate scares, financial breakdowns, equipment failures, water shortages, and other ‘interesting’ mishaps but we wouldn’t trade living on the Sea and traveling wherever the wind takes us for anything,” their official website states.

That’s some serious dedication to the road. Or ripple.

While it may not be the travel-blogging couple’s first trip to the rocky heart of the Mediterranean, time has clearly only strengthened their love for the island. The couple previously documented their travels through the Mediterranean in 2014, which included a nice stop in Malta on their way from Crete to Gibraltar.

While in Malta, the couple also crossed paths with a Polish woman named Justyna – a kindred spirit of sorts with similar intentions of sailing the world. Amazingly enough, Justyna just purchased an old boat named “Juanita” for only €1, and plans on refurbishing her boat over the next few years until it’s ready to sail the Pacific Ocean.

See! All it takes is €1.

The couple also documented a ship wreck dive at ‘Um El Feroud’, the former Libyan oil tanker that was scuttled off Malta’s coast in 1995 and used to create an artificial reef.

Bon Voyage and come again, Riley & Elayna! You’ll always have a place to anchor here.
