Watching the 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, it would probably never cross your head that one of the Oompa Loompas is in fact a Maltese guy.

Well, as it so happens, there was one very Maltese actor amidst the colourful cast… and being an Oompa Loompa is just one detail from a very decorated portfolio.

Angelo Muscat As Oompa Loompa

At four feet and three inches, Angelo Muscat never let his height affect him or hinder his life. As soon as he was of age, Angelo started working as a stoker, tending steam furnaces at a local Royal Air Force base.

When both of his parents died, Angelo was left alone, and it was at this time that he decided to take the step that would change his career and life forever. He desperately needed a change of scenery, so he decided to leave Malta for good.

He moved to England at the age of 31 where he soon stumbled upon the opportunity to become part of the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs cast. After getting the gig, Angelo toured the UK with the rest of the actors as they performed the show.

Muscat later on landed a part in the 1965 serial Galaxy 4, which was part of the Doctor Who series. What followed were many roles on both television and cinema — he even played roles for classics such as the Queen’s servant in a television adaptation for Alice in Wonderland and even had a role in another TV series called Emergency: Ward 10.

Muscat also had the opportunity to work alongside The Beatles (you know, legendary British icons? Those Beatles) for their Magical Mystery Tour of ’67.
