American TikToker Alexa Curtis recently visited Malta and left quite an impression on the Maltese community, sparking controversy with several of her videos.

The entrepreneur and writer first announced her presence in Malta a month ago and soon began posting a series of videos with some questionable claims. Among her statements were that she was the “first verified person” to visit Malta and her experience at what she called “the only Michelin restaurant” on the island.

The first video to provoke a strong reaction from locals was a food review she did at a local restaurant chain and convenience shop, which she referred to as a “bodega store.” This video reached Malta’s algorithm and received over 100 comments.

“I just got to Malta, which is not to be confused with Greece—I thought I was gonna be in Greece,” Alexa began in her video. One local responded, “Why would you think Malta is in Greece?” to which she replied, “Maybe it sounds like Mykonos?”

In a follow-up video, Alexa explained that she had just learned Malta is closer to Africa than Greece.

Later, she reviewed sushi from a local restaurant, claiming it was “the only Michelin star restaurant in Malta.” Maltese viewers quickly corrected her, pointing out that there are actually five Michelin-starred restaurants on the island, and she had not dined at any of them.

Alexa continued to post videos, including trying date cakes, visiting Gozo, and reviewing another sushi place to make up for her previous mistake.
