Air Malta Bids Farewell To One Of The First Pilots To Join Its Ranks

After over 43 years flying as an Air Malta pilot, Joseph Sciberras has made his final flight back home this Wednesday afternoon. Air Malta posted a heartfelt tribute to Sciberras, who was also an instructor for a whole quarter of a century.

The captain, affectionately known as Scibby among his peers, joined the national airline back in 1974, the same year that Air Malta was founded. He was still 18 years old at the time, and formed part of the very first group of 12 pilots to join Air Malta. As of this week, he was the last pilot from that group to still be flying.

Captain Sciberras has totalled just under 30,000 flying hours. In case you were wondering that amounts to almost three and a half years in the air… which is absolutely insane.

Sciberras was welcomed back to the airport by his colleagues and friends after his final flight on Wednesday, a short trip from Rome’s Fiumicino airport. Asked about his long career by TVM, Sciberras described it as, “beautiful”.

“It was interesting, it taught me a lot and it took me to a lot of different places. I couldn’t have had a better career.”

Captain Scibby has been through a lot of different experiences over the last four decades, including flying Pope John Paul II to the Vatican back in 2001.

The captain’s wife and children joined him on his last flight, and a small party followed in the Air Malta offices. “We wish Captain Sciberras a happy retirement and look forward to start welcoming him on board as a special guest,” the national airline said.
