‘Cleaner And More Sustainable Transport’: Transport Malta Offering €26 Million In Grants This Year

Transport Malta has launched eight new grants intended to encourage “cleaner and more sustainable transport, as well as alternative modes of transport”. These will include incentives for purchasing new and used electric and plug-in electric vehicles.
These new grants will account for a portion of the €26 million in grants being made available to the general public by Transport Malta this year.
Another part of this total sum was recently announced by Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia and Parliamentary Secretary Chris Bonett – an EU funded €15 million scheme intended to incentivise the purchase of new electric vehicles.
While this EU-funded scheme will be available for those buying brand new EVs, the grants announced most recently are intended to encourage purchases of “new, low emission and more environmentally friendly vehicles” while encouraging people to “convert their current vehicles” to become cleaner.
People can apply for the grant if they intend to retrofit dual fuel systems on heavy-duty vehicles with diesel engines, install approved photo-voltaic panels on passenger transport vehicles, add exhaust filtration to reduce air pollution, or re-power vehicles with an electric drivetrain.
These grants will also incentivise the purchase of wheelchair-accessible vehicles to transport passengers for hire, as well as buying new and used plug-in electric vehicles – and used electric vehicles.
Recently released NSO statistics have shown that in 2021, 29 vehicles were being newly registered in Malta every day. This may be contributing to increased pollution, traffic casualties, and even car-theft.
Although some of these new grants will incentivise purchases of new vehicles, those encouraging refurbishment and vehicular recycling – without increasing the total number of vehicles on our streets – could prove to be more beneficial in the immediate future.
Chief Officer for Land Transport Pierre Montebello said that Transport Malta is committed to offering opportunities promoting more environmentally sustainable transport.
“We launched these schemes precisely for this reason, and together with other initiatives such as free public transport, Transport Malta is ensuring that we have cleaner, more efficient and sustainable transport in our country,” said Montebello.
These grants can apply retroactively from the 1st January to the end of this year. If you upgraded towards a cleaner vehicle since this beginning of this year, you may be eligible for compensation for part of that greener choice.
