Comino Called ‘Hell on Earth’ In BBC Feature

Malta’s tiny sister island Comino is back in the spotlight — and not for the right reasons. This time, it’s the BBC highlighting concerns over the island’s overtourism and environmental strain.
Speaking to the BBC, Colin Backhouse, who runs a popular online guide recommending the best spots around Malta, said he refuses to promote Comino.
“In summer, it’s hell on earth,” Backhouse stated bluntly.
The once-tranquil Blue Lagoon has become a symbol of overtourism, attracting tens of thousands of tourists every year.
Activists like Moviment Graffitti have long protested against the environmental damage and excessive commercial activity on the island. From rows of sunbeds and umbrellas to overcrowded boats and kiosks.
In response, the government has pledged change. Back in February 2025, Minister Ian Borg vowed that new measures would be in place by this summer. These include limiting visitor numbers and scaling back commercial activity to protect the island’s delicate ecosystem.
As the world watches, Comino finds itself at a crossroads: paradise or problem?
Do you agree with Backhouse? Is Comino in need of serious change?
