Newlyweds’ Maltese Honeymoon Takes Disastrous Turn At Airport

Darren Stanway and his wife Nadia, 39 and 34 years old, arrived at Manchester Airport on the 28th of July in a taxi to get on their evening honeymoon flight to Malta, but the newlywed couple didn’t make it very far.

The two had been drinking beer and apparently also downed three bottles of wine between them on their way to the airport in the taxi, and by the time they arrived (too late to catch their flight), they got in a huge, drunken argument. By the time the police were called on the scene, the couple did not only end up missing their flight to Malta, but were fined and arrested. When the police officers showed up, Darren reportedly replied with, “I’m going to fucking sit here and drink my fucking beer; I know I’m in control of my fucking behaviour.”

Nadia was given a £90 fixed penalty, while Darren was arrested and fined £260 at Manchester Magistrates Court after admitting using threatening behaviour.

The Daily Mail reported how the agent on the desk allegedly heard Darren shouting, “Stupid bitch, it’s all your fault.” In a report of the court case, Indy100 reported how the man continued by saying, “I was here at Gate 48 and you put a Tannoy call out for me to go there,” while the agent at the desk called the police “as she was fearful that the behaviour would continue.”

During the court hearing, Darren claimed his wife had the three bottles of wine, while he had only had two pints and wasn’t drunk. “Thing is, she drinks wine same as when I drink vodka and whisky,” he said, “and she gets silly thoughts in her head. This was before we got to the plane. It started at customs. She was getting it in her head that I didn’t want to be with her or go on holiday with her. I was like: ‘I have just married you I don’t understand where she got all these tweaks in her head’.”

Stanway has previous convictions for public order offences, threatening criminal damage and common assault, but claimed his record was “not relevant” in the case.

The couple are believed to have boarded a later flight to Malta, and in fact both uploaded new Facebook profile photos from Malta last week.

When asked by the judge what he would do differently next time, Darren replied, “No more wine for the wife.”
