KM Malta Airlines To Suspend Catania Flights In Winter Season

KM Malta Airlines has announced the discontinuation of its winter flights to Catania, citing the route’s commercially unviable status due to intense competition from low-cost airlines and ferry services.
A spokesperson for the national airline explained to MaltaToday that consistently low fares have made it impossible to cover operational costs effectively.
Demand for the service typically peaks on weekends, with many passengers flying from Malta on Fridays and returning on Sundays. Despite solid bookings in one direction, return flights often struggle to meet performance expectations.
In a strategic shift, KM Malta Airlines plans to resume the Catania route in 2026, operating only during the peak summer months from July to September.
The cancellation has disappointed some travellers, including tour operator Sharon Camilleri, who expressed her heartbreak over the impact on her business, which focused on showcasing the beauty of Sicily.
