2024 has been a landmark year for cruise tourism in Malta, with a record-breaking 940,000 passenger movements registered at the Valletta Cruise Port—4% higher than the pre-pandemic peak in 2019.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, Transport Minister Chris Bonett, and Valletta Cruise Port CEO Stephen Xuereb shared the exciting news during a visit to the Grand Harbour, highlighting the industry’s resilience and contribution to Malta’s economy.

Some key highlights from 2024 where that there were 357 cruise ship calls in 2024 and cruise tourism contributed an estimated €88 million to Malta’s economy: €38 million from passenger spending and €50 million from cruise line operations.

“We want cruise passengers to enjoy their experience and put our country in their bucket list for a longer holiday next time round,” said Ian Borg, emphasising the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to improve Malta’s tourism product.

Minister Chris Bonett also spotlighted sustainability efforts, including the shore-to-ship power infrastructure at the Grand Harbour.

The system, capable of powering up to five cruise liners simultaneously, is expected to reduce pollution by 90% for nearby residents by 2030. Malta remains the first Mediterranean port to adopt this groundbreaking technology.

CEO Stephen Xuereb praised the collective efforts that led to these achievements, reaffirming Malta’s position as a top Mediterranean cruise destination.

With the expansion of Quay Pinto 4-5 and ongoing investments in sustainable maritime infrastructure, Malta is well-positioned for continued growth in cruise tourism.
